Belice earthquake, 50 years on: A tale of two villages (27 images)

Gibellina and Poggioreale were two small villages in the mountains of southwest Sicily. They were destroyed by the Belice earthquake on the night of the 15th January 1968, which killed around 900 people. Ten towns and villages were significantly damaged. Gibellina and its closest neighbour Poggioreale, 3km away, were left in ruins.
