Hurricanes Irma and Maria
In early September 2017, islands across the Caribbean were devastated by Hurricane Irma, one of the strongest tropical Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded. Hundred of thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. The islands of Anguilla, Barbuda, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and the Turks and Caicos were particularly badly affected. Irma was followed on 19 September by the equally powerful Hurricane Maria - an unprecedented two category 5 hurricanes in the space of less than two weeks. Maria struck the island of Dominica causing widespread destruction. The UK government responded by sending a military taskforce to assist across the region as well as releasing almost £60 million in humanitarian aid. I have just spent 2 and a half weeks in the region, documenting the UK's response.
