The martyred city: Oradour-sur-Glane (14 images)
The small town of Oradour-sur-Glane, near Limoges in central France, was the scene of one the worst massacres of civilians during WWII. 642 people were killed in one night on 10 June 1944, by a detachment of Nazi SS troops. The town was virtually razed to the ground afterwards, but the ruins have been preserved as they were found, as a memorial to the victims. It is now sometimes referred to as La Cité Martyre - the martyred city.
